Course Overview

The primary role of a Health and Safety Representative (HSR) is to represent the health and safety interests of a work group and to raise any issues with their employer. The HSR liaises with other workers in the workplace to identify health and safety issues and liaise with management. HSRs are elected by colleagues to represent the work collective in discussions with management.

HSRs in Queensland must undertake the relevant approved training course within 28 days of their election. Employers are required to allow the HSR to take time off work to attend this training.

It is a legislative requirement that HSRs that have completed the full 5 day course are also required to undertake a 1 day HSR refresher course every 12 months after the initial training.

The HSR course provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfil their role as a HSR in Queensland.

Course Outline

HSR full 5 day course

The key areas covered by the course include:

• Overview of the WHS legislative framework
• Duties of various parties
• Key WHS terminology
• The role of WHSQ and penalties for non‐compliance
• Requirements and mechanisms for consultation in the workplace on work health and safety issues
• The role, entitlements and protections available for HSRs and Health and Safety Committees (HSCs)
• Resolving workplace health and safety issues through negotiation and conflict resolution
• Identifying hazards and ways in which they can be eliminated or minimised
• Incident notification and investigation
• Issuing Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs) and directing unsafe work to cease

Participants must:

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Have at least a Year 10 level of numeracy, literacy and communication skills
• Have the ability to read and write English
• Have 3 forms of identification to produce to assessor

Refresher course

The HSR 1 day refresher course is to be completed by Health and Safety representatives holding accreditation at least every 12 months after completion of initial training. The entitlement to refresher training begins 12 months after the initial training.

The course revises the key areas covered by the initial course and ensures the knowledge of the participants remains current to continue with their accreditation.

Each participant must still be 18 years or older and provide a copy of the original Statement issued from the HSR training as well as identification.

All enrolments are required at least 7 days prior to course commencement to ensure the RTO meets the notification timeframe of the course to Worksafe Qld
